The total amount spent online by consumers in the 30 countries we cover was $1,456bn in 2014, of which 21% was accounted for by US consumers. China is the second-largest market, and Verdict Financial forecasts that the country will overtake the US as the biggest online commerce market in 2015.

Mobile commerce already accounts for a significant proportion of online expenditure in Asia Pacific markets, with Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore being particularly developed mobile commerce markets.

Payment cards remain the payment tool most heavily used for online commerce, accounting for $482bn of transactions in 2014. However, the growth of alternatives has seen the share of payment cards as a whole (credit, debit, and prepaid) fall. The use of cards dipped below 50% of the total value of online payments in 2012.
