Algeria Wind Energy Outlook
Algeria is rich in oil and natural gas, but lacks coal reserves. Its economy is heavily dependent on the hydrocarbon sector. Prospects for renewables are particularly bright, with a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program commencing in 2014. Until 2020, most of the emphasis will be on wind and solar Photovoltaic (PV) due to lower costs, but in the longer term, Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects are expected to be implemented. The country has huge wind potential in the south, particularly in the southwest, where wind velocity is over 6 meters per second (m/s). Adrar, which came online in July 2014, is the only active wind power plant. It has a capacity of 10.2 Megawatts (MW), and Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica is the manufacturer and Sonelgaz Spa is the owner. During the 2014-2015 period, the Algerian Ministry of Energy will conduct studies on two wind farms with a capacity of 20 MW each, and, looking ahead, the 2016-2030 period will see studies to evaluate favorable locations for wind power projects with a capacity of around 1,700 MW (MEM, 2015).
