Croatia Wind Energy Outlook
Croatia is a net importer of power, importing more than 70% of the power that it consumes. It generates most of its power from hydropower, meaning that it increases imports substantially during times of drought. According to its energy sector development strategy, it is also obligated to ensure that 20% of its consumption comes from renewable sources by 2020. Currently, only a small share of its power comes from renewable resources despite significant untapped renewable potential, promoted through FiTs and incentives such as guaranteed grid connection facilities to renewable power producers, on a priority basis.
The wind power market had a cumulative installed capacity of 254 MW in 2013, which is forecast to increase year on year to 699 Megawatts (MW) by 2020 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 15.6%. In 2014, a total deal value of USD 736m was recorded, of which debt offerings was the largest contributor. Croatia currently has 12 wind energy projects in the pipeline with a combined capacity of 1,094 MW.
