About the Report

About the Report

The report titled "Japan Solar Photovoltaic Market Outlook to 2015" provides a comprehensive analysis on various aspects such as On-Grid and Off-Grid Cumulative and Annual Installed Capacity, PV power per capita, market segmentation and competitive landscape of the major players operating in the country. The report also entails the SWOT analysis of solar PV market in Japan.

The future outlook presented the base case, conservative case and aggressive case scenario factor analysis providing an insight on the prospects in the solar PV cumulative and annual installed capacity for the country.

Japan has one of the most developed and mature solar PV market in the world. The country is a leading producer of solar panels and is the third largest in the world in total solar power with most of the grid connected systems. The solar PV market size was witnessed at USD 7.3 billion in 2010.

The country has registered annual installed capacity of 990 MW in 2010 which increased almost 2 times from 483 MW in 2009. The Japan solar PV market has witnessed phenomenal growth of over 100% in every year following 2007.

Multi-Crystalline Silicon solar cells and modules dominated the solar PV market with 52% of the market share in the total capacity of shipments. The market share of this technology has decreased over time as companies are switching over to thin wafer silicon technology. Single Crystalline silicon is the second largest market segment with the contribution of 32.8% in the total shipment power in 2010.

Japan's solar PV segment is an export oriented market. The country exported 58.1% of its solar cells and modules production to overseas countries such as Germany, Spain and others. The proportion of its production shipped to overseas countries has reduced over time with several other emerging Asian Pacific countries such as China and Taiwan providing stiff competition to the country. About 41.9% of the production of solar cells and modules were utilized domestically for residential, commercial and consumer purposes.

Japan has compelling growth opportunities in the solar PV market with major catalysts such as government national net solar feed-in tariff, emphasis on solar PV over nuclear power and go-green initiative driving the future growth of the industry. The country presently generates about 9% of its power from renewable sources out of which solar contributes 1% as compared to 30% from the nuclear industry.

Under the normal business conditions, the annual installed is expected to increase to ~ MW in 2011 from 990 MW in 2010 with the major growth in non-residential sector in relative terms. The annual installed capacity will cross ~ MW benchmark by 2013 and ~ MW mark by 2015.

Key Topics Covered in the Report:

• The feed-in-tariffs introduced in the country and their effect on the solar PV market

• The annual and cumulative PV installations along with PV power per capita in the country from 2006-2010

• Future Outlook on the basis of assumed scenarios i.e. base case, worst case and aggressive case on cumulative installed capacity, annual installed capacity and PV power per capita, from 2011-2015
