Cigarettes in Italy, 2016
"Cigarettes in Italy, 2016" is an analytical report by GlobalData that provides extensive and highly detailed current and future market trends in the Italian market. The report offers market size and structure of the overall and per capita consumption based upon a unique combination of industry research, fieldwork, market sizing analysis, and our in-house expertise.
Italy is one of the largest duty paid cigarette markets in Western Europe, however, since 2006, cigarette consumption in the country is declining. The market almost entirely comprises filter cigarettes of blond American or European blended varieties; dark blends now accounting for no more than 1.2% of sales. As in many western markets, a strong trend towards lower tar products has developed, partly in response to EU regulatory changes. As a result, light cigarettes now account for over 61% of sales.
Rising prices have resulted in down trading with the super-low value segment now accounting for one in 10 sales.
Full flavor products account for the majority of sales and filter cigarettes accounted for over 99.9% of sales in 2015.
PMI leads the overall market, holding over a half of the market share, and Marlboro is the leading brand family in Italy.
Export activity has emerged as a major feature of the Italian market, with 1,428 million pieces exported in 2014.
