Spain has historically been a comparatively small but expanding market for smoking tobacco products. However, it has been experiencing strong growth of late, with demand for FCT (including pipe tobacco used for rolling) in particular soaring throughout the historic period. The Spanish tobacco market has long been dominated by factory made cigarettes, which, in 2014, still accounted for more than 80% of consumption, although this is down from 91% in 2009.

Overall consumption of smoking tobacco has expanded from almost 500 tons in 1991 to approximately 6,900 tons in 2014

Smoking tobacco, including both pipe and HRT, is now the second largest sector with over 11% of total tonnage, ahead of cigars and cigarillos with almost 8%. Annual per capita consumption rates dropped back to 130g approximately in 2014, which were double 1990 levels. A slow recovery is projected for 2015 based on the first four months data

Imports of smoking tobacco have shown an upward trend from 2009-2012. However, volumes fell back by more than 2% in 2013 to over 9,600 tons, before recovering almost 400 tons in 2014

The outlook is for further growth in demand for FCT. Canadean forecasts that volumes will increase 25% from current levels by 2024
