About the Report

About the Report

The report titled "North America Biofuel Market Outlook to 2016 - Surging Demand in Aviation Sector" provides a comprehensive analysis of market size of global and North America biofuel industry, market segmentation of North America biofuel industry by fuel ethanol and bio diesel. The report also entails value chain of fuel ethanol and bio diesel production. The report also provides profile of major players operating in the biofuel industry.

North America

The biofuel market in North America is one of the predominant markets in the global biofuel industry. The North America biofuel market is dominantly held by the US with a share of approximately ~% in 2011 and rest of the share is being contributed by Canada.

The North America biofuel market has been dominated by fuel ethanol in both production and consumption from 2005-2011 with the US being the largest ethanol producer in the world. The fuel ethanol production and consumption has witnessed an increase from 2005-2011 on account of surging mandate blending rate of fuel ethanol in the petroleum oil. However, 90% of ethanol in the region is mainly produced from corn which has an important impact on the price of the crop. In 2004, the prices of the corn were USD 95 per tonne which have reached to USD ~ per tonne in the first half of 2012, showcasing an increase of ~%.

The US

Biofuels have become a leading alternative to fossil fuels in the US as it can be produced domestically. In addition, it also offers a partial solution to global climate change and has the potential to encourage the rural development in the country. The biofuel industry in the US grew at a CAGR of 21.7% from the period 2006-2011. The market in the US increased by 2.8% in 2011 to USD ~ million due to rise in the government mandate blending rate targets.

The country biofuel production has been growing steadily in the last six years from 260.7 thousand barrels per day in 2006 to ~ thousand barrels per day in 2011. The industry has witnessed tough times when the crude oil prices were low, corn and other food based feedstock prices were high or both. In the US, there are ~ ethanol plants with a production capacity of ~ million gallons per year operating in 29 states while around 10 ethanol plants are under construction with a capacity of ~ million gallons per year in 2011. The bio diesel production capacity registered in 2011 was approximately ~ million gallons per year.

Canada

Canada bio diesel industry is in an early development stage. The lack of bio diesel production in some provinces indicated that the British Columbia fuel policies to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 33% till 2020 by using renewable energy seems to be unrealized. The imports are expected to increase in the country in order to fill the gap between the domestic production and the required volume of bio diesel needed to meet the federal mandate target in the short term.

The country has observed an incline in the imports of bio diesel from ~ million liters in 2010 to ~ million liters in 2011 on account of shortage in the domestic bio diesel production. In 2011, Canada produces approximately ~thousand barrels per day of bio diesel which just covers 34% of the total bio diesel consumption.
