CHAPTER 1 - MARKET SUMMARY
Market Overview
South Africa's transportation-services ecosystem serves a geographically dispersed economy with large mining, manufacturing, agricultural, retail and consumer-mobility requirements. Statistics South Africa reported ZAR 717.0 billion of income for the registered transport and storage industry in 2023, compared with ZAR 543.6 billion in 2019, equivalent to a 7.2% annualised increase over the period. Freight transport by road alone generated ZAR 227.1 billion in 2023, while activities of other transport agencies generated ZAR 216.9 billion.
The market is structurally broad. The formal ecosystem includes rail operators, road-haulage companies, airlines, public and private passenger operators, pipeline operators, cargo handlers, port-linked service providers, freight forwarders and integrated logistics companies. The informal sector is also material: in the second quarter of 2025, approximately 1.12 million people were employed in transport, of whom around 732,000 were formal-sector workers and 384,000 were informal-sector workers.
Future Outlook
The South Africa Transportation Services Market is forecast to increase from USD 45.0 billion in 2025 to USD 68.1 billion by 2032, representing a 6.10% CAGR. The forecast assumes gradual economic expansion, continued road-freight dominance, higher parcel and e-commerce activity, railway open access, rehabilitation of commuter rail, incremental port capacity, private-sector participation and increased adoption of integrated transport-management technologies.
The strongest structural upside is expected from rail and intermodal reform. In July 2026, the Department of Transport stated that current rail freight was around 165 million tonnes versus approximately 280 million tonnes of market demand. Eleven private Train Operating Companies had been approved, with planned movement of up to 24 million tonnes annually once operations commence. The government's longer-term objective is to move 250 million tonnes by rail annually by 2030.

CHAPTER 4 - Market Size & Growth
Market Size, Growth Forecast and Trends
The historical series below is a Ken Research reconstructed series, not a direct annual official market-size publication. It reconciles the 2023 Stats SA structural survey with industry recovery, transport-service price dynamics, operating indicators and annual currency movements. The 2025 value is separately triangulated using current operating and employment inputs.
Historical & Projected Market Size ($ Million)
Year-over-Year Growth Rate (%)
Historical CAGR Verification
The 2020–2025 historical CAGR is 7.12%, calculated as (45.0 / 31.9)^(1/5) ? 1.
Forecast CAGR Verification
The 2025–2032 CAGR calculated from the rounded published values is 6.10%: (68.1 / 45.0)^(1/7) ? 1 = approximately 6.097%, which rounds to 6.10%.
Rail Open Access Changes the Supply Structure
The approval of eleven private Train Operating Companies represents a structural transition from a predominantly state-operated freight-rail system toward controlled open access. The approved operators plan to move up to 24 million tonnes per year, providing a new commercial market for traction, rolling stock, terminals, forwarding and intermodal integration.
Road Remains the Core Physical Freight Mode
In the revised Stats SA 2025 land-transport series, road carried approximately 975.2 million tonnes versus 168.3 million tonnes on rail. This equates to roughly 85% of the road-and-rail freight payload captured by that survey, confirming the continuing importance of trucking even as policy seeks greater rail utilisation.
Parcel Transportation Is Outgrowing Traditional Freight Categories
Stats SA reported that parcel-transport income increased by 30.9% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2025, contributing positively to overall freight-transportation income growth. This supports continued investment in courier networks, urban distribution, routing technology and last-mile capacity.
Passenger Rail Is Recovering
By the end of March 2026, annual passenger journeys on the commuter-rail network had surpassed 100 million and 35 of 40 priority lines had returned to service. The Department of Transport continues to target restoration toward pre-pandemic passenger levels over the medium term.
CHAPTER 5 - Market Data
V02 Market Size Calculation and Triangulation
The 2023 source values are directly reported by Statistics South Africa. The 5.5% nominal update and 20% informal-sector productivity factor are Ken Research modelling assumptions, disclosed explicitly rather than presented as official statistics. Stats SA's Q2 2025 employment data provides the formal/informal employment ratio used in the adjustment, while OECD/FRED reports a 2025 annual-average exchange rate of 17.88086 rand per US dollar.

15.3% of household consumption expenditure, or approximately ZAR 467 billion
e directly substituted for service-provider revenue. Stats SA's Income and Expenditure Survey 2022/23 found transport represented 15.3% of household consumption expenditure, or approximately ZAR 467 billion. This measure includes spending components outside the report's service-provider boundary, so the demand-side model strips out private vehicle acquisition and other non-service expenditure before combining passenger-service demand with corporate freight and logistics demand.
USD 14.70 billion in 2025
imates are materially below the broad transportation-services total because they measure narrower categories. Mordor Intelligence places South Africa's freight and logistics market at approximately USD 14.70 billion in 2025; Grand View Research reports approximately USD 4.87 billion for freight forwarding; and Ken Research's narrower South Africa Freight Market reference is around USD 15 billion. These are used as sub-market and lower-bound sanity checks, not direct substitutes for the broad transportation-services estimate.
CHAPTER 6 - Segmentation
Market Segmentation Framework
The following service-type allocation is a Ken Research analytical split of the USD 45.0 billion total. It is calibrated to official activity classifications and operator revenue models and is explicitly treated as an estimate rather than a regulator-published segmentation.
Mode shares below refer specifically to direct transportation-movement revenue. Freight forwarding, cargo handling and multimodal support revenues are excluded from this denominator to avoid double counting.
