UAE Overall Test Prep Market Size –By Enrollments

The number of enrollments in in UAE has grown at a moderate rate during the period 2013-2018. Courses such as IELTS, TOEFL and SAT have more enrollments as the people in gulf countries prefer to move to foreign countries such as UK and Europe than coming to India for continuing engineering and medical studies. In 2018, the students enrolled in Scholastic Aptitude Test were the highest.

UAE Overall Test Prep Market Size –By Revenue: The UAE test preparation market was growing at a remarkable CAGR during the period 2013-2018. The demand for high quality higher education by the UAE population has resulted in such a tremendous growth of the market. GRE has seen a major growth in the market in the past few years but the revenue attained from SAT, TOEFL and pre engineering exams is still higher. The fees charged for Pre engineering and pre medical test is almost double in comparison to other courses provided by the institutes.

UAE (Pre Engineering and Pre Medical) Test Preparation Industry Size (By Enrollment): The enrollments of pre engineering exams were almost twice in comparison to pre medical exams in 2018. Students prefer enrolling them in Grade 11 for two year integrated program. Dubai has more than half of the total enrollments of UAE in pre engineering and pre medical entrance exams with more batches and faculty members working in the institutes. Abu Dhabi lacks in availability of good institutes in the emirate and is still not exposed to big players in the market. Sharjah is the next best destination for coaching institutes due to proximity near Dubai. More students are enrolled in the institutes in Sharjah than that of Abu Dhabi and have same teachers from Dubai institute branches.
The e-learning platforms are affecting the test prep market but mostly students still prefer offline tutoring rather than relying on online platforms because of physical presence of the teacher.

Foundation courses: The market is still in its nascent stage. The institutes focus on providing foundation courses from Grade 6 on subjects such as math and science which form the base for entrance exams in future. Separate batches for ICSE and CBSE based curriculum are conducted by the institutes. The enrollments and penetration rate of the students in Grade 10 are more than Grade 9 in these institutes in all emirates for foundation courses. Online portals are even getting popular in foundation courses as they are  cheap, affordable and have proper structure to be followed along with pre recorded online lectures on various concepts which can be attended by the student at his/her convenient time.
 

Competitive Scenario

The test preparation market is extremely concentrated among few players’ that are able to charge premium fees over others. Dubai is the first choice of all the institutes to set up their branch followed by expansion to other emirates specially Sharjah due to the proximity to Dubai. The test prep market is dominated by Indian institutes that have opened their subsidiaries in UAE in partnership with local players or other industry players. The major parameters in which the competitors compete includes number of branches, pricing, discounting strategies, batch size, teachers’ quality and infrastructure availability such as smart classes and online portals.

Indian schools in UAE: The enrollments of Indian students in Indian schools are more in Dubai than in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Combination of offline learning i.e. face-to-face traditional tutoring - and online learning, widely known as blended learning is the method most used in most of the Indian schools in UAE. Almost all the schools partner with the institutes for foundation courses and entrance based coaching to have parallel curriculum in Schools and institutes.

UAE online platforms: The online education in UAE and the Middle East region continue to gain penetration due to easy accessibility to broadband internet and the presence of multiple, reputed e-learning platforms. Online tutoring is getting popular due to high fees charged by private tuition centers in UAE but is still at its nascent stage. New platforms such as teachmenow.com that bring online tutors on one single platform are gaining popularity in UAE.
 

Future Outlook and Projections

The penetration rate of the students in the institutes is expected to remain stable with a marginal increase in the next 5 years. The growth in the Enrollment for pre medical exams will be higher than that of pre engineering exams. The institute will only be able to survive by reducing the fee or increasing scholarships given the increasing competition along with online portals and e-learning platforms. The competition amongst the existing players will be intensified in terms of pricing as more Indian players are entering into the market at reasonable prices. Online platforms such as e-medical prep and testprepkart will gain more popularity in the coming years. Indian school enrollments in Indian schools in Sharjah will increase at a faster rate than Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
