About the Report

About the Report

The common medical robotics used are the ones which can be surgeon driven. There are autonomous surgical robots also available in the market, wherein robots can operate independent of human control. The autonomous robots are specifically designed to suture or stitch up soft tissue. Campaigners of robot-assisted systems boast of better patient outcomes through better pre-operative planning and improved execution. There is a perceived advantage of robotic surgery, i.e. it could be less painful, early recovery, early return to work and patient safety if used appropriately. The disadvantages could be listed as increased complications during the surgeon's learning curve, high blood loss, misalignment of prosthesis, costs and unpredictable results.

By product type, surgical robotics act as one of the important components. With advances in robotic technology, future surgical robots will be smaller, less expensive, and easier to operate, which may ultimately facilitate their acceptance in surgery and help to improve their clinical use. When it comes to Rehabilitation Robotic Systems, demand for rehabilitation robots could be particularly strong in Japan given the nation's rapidly growing elderly population. With a rapidly ageing population and a shrinking workforce, Japan is one of the world's oldest societies. By 2065, UN expects Japan's population to fall by an additional 28 million people, corresponding to a 22% drop. Since 2000, the number of Japanese people of working age shrank by 13% and it is expected that by 2040, more than one in three people in Japan would be over 65 years old, the highest globally. For diagnostic robotics in the country, as per the Institute of Medicine at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, diagnostic errors cause around 10% of patient deaths and contribute for 6-17% of hospital complications. Finally, for hospital and pharmacy robots, the country is using nurse robots as supplemental healthcare workers in elderly homes.

Based on application, the Japanese healthcare robotics market is bifurcated into General Surgery, Gynecology Surgery, Urology Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurological Surgery and others. In 2018, robots were majorly used in General Surgery. The segment generated revenue of USD 696.1 million in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.54% during the analysed period 2019-2025. Surgical robot is a simple master-slave device which helps the surgeons to overcome many of the difficulties faced during an operation. Surgical robots have been envisioned to overcome the limitations and extend the capabilities of human surgeons, allowing them to perform precise and reproducible tasks.

Recently, robotic helpers have made their way into Japanese hospitals to reduce the workload of human healthcare professionals. According to Japan's robot strategy, by 2020, the government wants four in five care recipients to accept some support provided by robots. Accordingly, assistive technologies such as home monitoring robots to support care for older people are being developed, to cater to the increasing aging population. Thus, home care providers come into picture wherein medical robots are required. The government of Japan is prioritizing the development of robotic caregivers for elderly population as the ageing society faces a predicted shortfall of 370,000 caregivers by 2025. This would encourage the institutional long-term care provider to adopt more of robots to cater to the growing elderly personals. Use of healthcare robots were more common in Hospitals & Clinics, the segment accounted for 72.6% share in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.64% during the forecast period to reach a market size of USD 2,174.1 million by 2025. By region, the report has focused on Kanto, Kinki and the rest of Japan. Kanto and Kinki are the most populated regions of Japan. Kanto region dominated the use of healthcare robotics in Japan. In the Kinki region, Kyoto University Hospital has the surgical unit that uses da Vinci surgical robot along with University Hospital, Kyoto Perfectural University of Medicine. Further, Department of Thoracic Surgery, Kyoto University have started to use robotic-assisted surgery and have made it standard approach. Rest of Japan includes the six remaining regions of Japan namely Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chubu, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu.

Further, major players operating in the Japanese healthcare robotics market include Zimmer Biomet, iRobot Corporation, Mazor Robotics, Accuracy Incorporated, Hansen Medical Inc./ Auris, Stryker corporation, Canon and Hitachi Medical Corporation. These companies adopt numerous growth strategies such as business expansion, product launches, partnership among others to sustain in the ever-growing Japanese robotics market.

Japanese Healthcare Robotics market generated revenue of USD 1,796.1 million in 2018. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.07% during the forecast period to reach a market size of USD 3,077.0 million by 2025. Surgical Robotic Systems were the most adopted health robot in Japan in 2018, accounting for 36.4% share.
