About the Report

The report titled “Global Biofuel Market Outlook to 2016 – Going Mainstream Through Government Support” provides a comprehensive analysis of market size of biofuel industry on the basis of region such as Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and Central and South America, market segmentation by fuel ethanol and bio diesel. The report also entails the value chain of fuel ethanol and bio diesel production. The competitive landscape and profile of major players such as POET, Archer Daniels Midland, Abengoa Bioenergy, Green Plain Renewable Energy and Cosan operating in the industry was also covered in the report.
The future projections are included to provide an overview on the prospects and expected growth drivers in the global biofuel industry.
Global
The global biofuel industry is a fragmented market with the presence of large number of players such as POET, Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), Abengoa Bioenergy, Green Plains Renewable Energy, Cosan and others. POET is the leading first generation biofuel producer in the market with the production capacity of 1.6 billion gallons per year. Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) is the second largest biofuel producer in the world with the production of around ~ thousand barrels per day and a market share of ~% in 2011. ADM is the leading bio diesel producer in Europe with the world largest bio diesel production facility in Hamburg, Germany.
Over the coming years, the production of biofuel in the global market are projected to rise at a CAGR of 12.5% in the next five years due to an increasing carbon gas emission, reducing oil imports and oil dependence, diversification of energy supply and the development of the rural sector.
Asia Pacific
The biofuel market in Asia-Pacific region has grown remarkably over the past few years due to the growth in the emerging markets such as China, India, Thailand, Australia, South Korea and Indonesia. The scientists in the Asia-Pacific region have supported the growth in the production of biofuel with an understanding of their potential benefits, impact and risk in order to meet the growing demand. The market in the Asia-Pacific has grown at a CAGR of 32.1% from USD ~ million in 2006 to USD ~ million in 2011.
China biofuel industry has evolved remarkably in the recent few years and established themselves as a leading producer of biofuel in Asia-Pacific. In 2011, the country has witnessed a growth of ~% with revenue of USD ~ million in 2011 in comparison to 2,003.6 million in 2010. The growth has been influenced by a rise in the sales of automobile which has led to increase in the demand of transportation fuel in the country. In 2010, diesel consumption reached to 166,240 million liters while gasoline consumption was approximately ~ million liters in the country.
Europe
In 2011, Europe has witnessed a decline of 5.3% to USD ~ million in 2011 as compared to USD ~ million in 2010. This decrease in revenue is influenced by the decline in the consumption of biofuel in Central Europe along with no increase in the utilization of biofuel in the Western Europe in 2011. Italy has experienced a downfall in biofuel consumption from ~ thousand barrels per day of biofuel in 2011 in comparison to 34.7 thousand barrels per day in 2010. Other parts of Europe have also observed a decline of 15.2% to 103.7 thousand barrels per day in 2011.
The biofuel market in Germany is the largest market in the region. The biofuel revenue in Germany in 2011 has increased to USD ~ million from 6,352.7 million in 2006. This has been majorly due to an increase in the energy consumption within the transport sector of the country. The constant growing country need for an individual mobility has led to an incline in the transportation fuel consumption which has surged the dependency on oil by more than ~% in 2011. The constant rising oil prices and limited availability of oil in the global market has made the country to increase the percentage of biofuels in their fuel supply policies.
North America
The biofuel market in North America is one of the predominant markets in the global biofuel industry. The North America biofuel market is dominantly held by the US with a share of approximately 99.7% in 2011 and rest of the share is being contributed by Canada.
The US is the major market in the biofuel sector holding approximately 44.5% share in the entire global market in 2011. The country has witnessed revenue of USD 62,321.8 million in 2011. This is largely due to an increase in the consumption of fuel ethanol in the country. The higher demand for fuel ethanol in the country has rapidly surged the number of ethanol production plants from 50 plants in 17 states with a production capacity of 1,701.7 million gallons per year in 1999 to 204 plants in 29 states with a production capacity of 13,507.9 million gallons per year in 2011. In the present scenario, approximately 94% of the ethanol production in the US is currently used as fuel additive in gasoline, while the rest of the production is used for the industrial purposes. The US biodiesel industry is younger and produces much lower volume in comparison to the ethanol industry.
Central and South America
The Central and South America region has emerged as a major producer of biofuels across the globe due to the availability of fertile land and tropical weather conditions which are fruitful for the production of food based feedstock in the region. The revenue generated from the biofuels products in the region has increased over the last five years from USD 10,073.0 million in 2006 to USD ~ million in 2011 on account of rising oil prices which has led to an incline in the government as well as the people interest in replacing their domestic demand for petroleum oil in transportation sector with biofuel.
Brazil was the first country across the globe to introduce the renewable fuel for the transportation sector. The country was the major producer of biofuel from past two decades but in the last five years the country was surpassed by the US. The biofuel industry in Brazil has showcased a strong growth in the past five years from USD 9,689.7 million in 2006 to USD ~ million in 2011. The growth has been influenced by the rise in the consumption of biofuel in the transportation sector through blending rate target. In the first half of 2010, the government has increased the ethanol blending rate target to ~% which has reduced to ~% in later half of 2011 due to the lower availability of sugarcane in the country.
