Source Market Insights: China
Summary
Chinese consumers fuelled a travel and tourism boom, which has grown over the historic period. However with over 130 million Chinese tourists making outbound trips in 2016, growth has slowed down considerably with just a 2.3% increase on the previous year.
Chinese tourists spent over US$189.3 billion in 2016, a slight drop of -1%. Although there were some significant setbacks last year in China's stock market and currency, this did not greatly affect the growth of travel and tourism. GlobalData expects Chinese outbound trips to continue growing with potential to reach a forecast level of 212.8 million trips by 2021.
Scope
Major hotel brands are capitalising on the growing outbound Chinese market with Sofitel leading the charge with a series of initiatives being introduced such as offering Chinese food dining options alongside a serious recruitment drive to enrol Mandarin speaking staff.
Additionally the hotel chain has also began recruiting Chinese Guest Relations Officers across it's largest hotel sites, who will be used to build relations with Chinese tour operators and travel agents.
