A music box or musical box is an automatic musical instrument in a box that produces musical notes by using a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc to pluck the tuned teeth (or lamellae) of a steel comb. They were developed from musical snuff boxes of the 18th century and called carillons a musique (French for "chimes of music"). Some of the more complex boxes also contain a tiny drum and/or bells in addition to the metal comb.There are two broad categories of musical box, cylinder or disc. Many variations of each type exist. Based on the number of the vibration plate, 18-note music box is the most popular type among consumers, with 77.29% market share in 2017, 30-note followed, with much higher prices. Based on downstream buyer type, current demand mainly comes from enterprise orders, souvenir shops, gift shops and private collection hobbies. Music boxes are available from stores and online, and range in price from USD 20 for a quality movement, to over USD 1,000 for the most elaborate pieces. The small 18-note musical movements are now being made almost exclusively in countries with low labor costs such as China, Taiwan and other Asia countries, while premium models mainly produced in Switzerland and USA.
