Nevertheless, snus remains popular as an aid to quitting smoking in addition to its use in places where smoking is no longer allowed. Snus is also increasingly being perceived as a healthier option, with especially strong recent growth in use among women. Snus currently accounts for just under half of tobacco consumption in Sweden with the profile for cigarettes declining.

Although the incidence of daily smoking is low and declining, dropping to only 12% of adults in 2012 compared with 26% at the start of the 1990s, the overall rate of smoking was actually increasing until 2010 but has declined since to stand at 16% in 2016.

The market is led by JTI Sweden, which acquired Gallaher Sweden in 2007. BAT and PMI follow closely behind.

Contraband and cross border trade also remains problematic.

Sweden loses volumes to other Scandinavian countries, particularly Denmark due to its greater price advantage. It also loses some volumes to Latvia, where the financial gains are substantially more. In contrast, Sweden gains considerable quantities being purchased by Norwegian visitors where recent years have seen an increasingly aggressive fiscal policy towards tobacco.
