Baby food in Chile has seen growth both in terms of value and volume between 2009 and 2015. Growth has been stimulated by the generally upward trend in the number of births, at least until 2015, and by a robust economy throughout most of the period. The number of live births has risen over the last decade, increasing by 12.9% since 2005. Compared with most of Latin America, Chile's economy has performed well since 2010, and relatively consistently. Chile has one of the more buoyant economies in South America, and prospects for the next few years are positive. Real growth in GDP is expected to be between 2% and 3% per year in 2016 and 2017 and between 3% and 4% from 2018 to 2021.
Consumption of baby food in Chile has increased by 17.7% since 2009. Market value reached 52.4% more than in 2009, and equivalent to growth of 27.4% at constant prices.
Baby milks account for over 60% of market value, with cereals taking a further 23% and wet meals 16%. Cereals remain the largest sector in volume terms, representing 40.5% of total volume sales at the end of 2015.
Nestle remains dominant, with a 69% value share and 79% of volume in 2015. Aspen now owns the Wyeth brands and is consequently in second place, with a 12.2% share of value sales of all baby food.
Supermarkets and hypermarkets represent the most important sales outlets of baby food in Chile, with an estimated 64% share of baby food volume in 2015, up from 56% in 2009.
