Qatar Healthcare Sector is Likely to Witness Strong Growth with Planned Development of Five New Hospitals: Ken Research

Qatar’s government has planned to build five new hospitals in collaboration with the private sector. The hospitals are to be built in four areas of Doha – North of Qatar University, Ain Khaled, Abu Hamour and Al Furoush- on plots ranging from 10,000 to 14,000 square meters. These planned hospitals will be dedicated to women, childcare and mental health

People across Qatar are facing several health care issues due to sedentary lifestyle and fast food consumption habits, such as obesity, diabetes, and other cardiovascular diseases, which are demanding for technologically advanced healthcare infrastructure. Qatar has been exponentially expanding its national healthcare system to cater the needs of its people and support economic diversification. The country has been developing its infrastructure including hospitals, diagnostic labs, and clinics in addition to the development of local clinicians, physicians and specialized doctors. In addition to all these factors, fast rising and ageing population in the country has also propelled the government to upgrade its public healthcare infrastructure.

There has been no increase in the number of hospitals in the country since 2012. However, the number of inpatient and outpatient visits has grown quite rapidly in the last few years. HMC was single largest public entity comprising of 8 different hospitals and accounted for over 65% of the overall inpatient visits in 2016. Private hospitals on the other hand, owing to significantly higher treatment cost, were observed to be major revenue generator in 2016.

Qatar is an import driven market in context to medical devices and pharmaceuticals. A very high portion of the country’s requirement of medical devices and pharmaceuticals is imported from international companies as of 2016. Lack of domestic drug/medical devices manufacturers coupled with high preference for branded medical devices and patented drugs by healthcare professionals and citizens has led to high imports. Of late, domestic companies such as Qatar Pharma and Qatari German Medical Equipments have ventured into healthcare sector to tap into the lucrative market opportunity as per the report by Ken Research titled “Qatar Healthcare Market to 2021 – High Prevalence of Diabetes and Rising Healthcare Infrastructure to Foster Future Growth

Analyst at Ken Research recommended that hospitals, market players, and other healthcare service providers could organize awareness programs to educate people about prevalent diseases and their effects during the future. This would increase the self caring attitude among the people and they will opt for diagnosis and treatment for specific disorders, generating revenue for the overall market.
