Cigarettes in Jamaica - Ken Research

Cigarettes in Jamaica

The Jamaican cigarette market is small with duty paid consumption falling dramatically in recent years. Recent increases in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) have done much to dent duty paid sales, which have fallen sharply on an annual basis since 2008. Additionally, the introduction of a smoking ban in 2013 contributed to a further reduction of cigarette consumption levels in Jamaica.

Key Findings

The increasing taxation and tightening restrictions have affected the duty paid sales badly, therefore the Jamaican cigarette market is small

In 2011 consumption contracted by 7.9%, with pressure on disposable incomes and the presence of a sizeable non-duty paid sector the main downward drivers

Until very recently, the market was largely supplied with locally produced cigarettes. These were manufactured by the only local producer, Carreras. However, in 2005 Carreras announced it would cease local manufacturing and since then the market has been entirely supplied by imports

WITCO, West Indies Tobacco Company, has become the major manufacturer, as BAT uses its Trinidad base to supply the Jamaican market
